Pearls of wisdom

I know I’m going to get in trouble… I was supposed to post this, like, 2 days ago but I kept forgetting. And, well, since I can’t take my Ambien tonight I’m not asleep yet! :)

As I mentioned on Friday, my sis is moving back to Houston. Although I gripe about how underappreciated I am at work, I’m very lucky to have a flexible schedule. Flexible enough that I can work from just about anywhere. So, with the boss’s permission, I headed down to San Antonio for the week so I could help Jo pack up her apartment. With my back going out on me, I wasn’t much packing help, but I was able to offer some pearls of wisdom to make Jo’s move a little easier.

I’m a bit of a compulsive list maker and planner. When we moved out of our apartment I judiciously labeled every box. My dad and hubby still tease me about the specificity of my labels: “Books, bedroom shelves, A-Mc.” Makes sense to me! But you know, the guys think they should make fun of me because they have the patience of a teaspoon when packing. Heck, after helping my parents through a couple of moves, I’ve learned my dad’s approach to packing: chuck the crap in the nearest empty box, cram it shut with liberal application of tape, and label it “STUFF.” Soooooooo not for me. :)

And, Jo has to store most of her stuff, so that adds to the hassle of sorting things both boxed and unboxed. So I devised a system for her (see picture) to make it easier to sort, load, and unload all her STUFF. And any cabinet that has been emptied is labled with a pink Post-It note so you don’t have to keep looking to make sure it’s empty. She wondered aloud if I was being too anal, so I adopted a mantra to help her prepare: “You’ll thank me later!”

Yes, she teased me. Yes, when she told my dad, he teased me. But she’ll thank me later. :D

Friday Felicitations - thank goodness for sisters

This Friday Felicitation is all about sisters. Specifically, mine.

First, and I  truly do admire her for this, she turned in her two week notice! She’s moving back home so she can go back to school. It takes a lot of guts to recognize you need that kind of change, much less uproot yourself and actually do it.

Second, she’s been so patient with me. I arranged to stay with her this week so I could help her pack up her stuff for the big move. Only my back had different plans, so I’ve been out of commission since Monday. How much did I pack before my back gave out? A whole 2 1/2 boxes! Gee whiz, what a help that was! She spent her day off carting me to the urgent care clinic, and she’s washed all my laundry, and been just generally very nice to me while I wince my way through the week.

Thank goodness for sisters! :)

Friday Felicitations - 300

No, this is not a post about the movie, 300. Although I have to say now that watching 300 in HD so you can see Gerard Butler’s six-pack in high definition is quite a lovely experience… But I digress!

This is my 300th post! And it’s appropriate that it falls in a Friday Felicitations post. While I’m not a particularly regular blogger, and I certainly don’t gain money or fame from this endeavor, it has been (and will continue to be) a great creative outlet for me. And even if only 8 people read it (my all-time high subscription rate!), I still enjoy making it a part of my life.

Just for grins, I thought I’d take you down memory lane for my five favorite posts:

  1. The warmth of tradition, Part 1 and Part 2
  2. Jungle Kitty
  3. Vicious man-eating zebras
  4. Watch out for those low-flying Ding Dongs
  5. Local lizard revels in newfound fame

It was really hard to narrow it down to five, and I’m not sure if I’d pick different ones if you asked me tomorrow. :) Any favorites of yours I didn’t include?

    Holy Oleo, Batman, it’s September!

I’m officially disturbed. I can’t remember the last time my brain didn’t short-circuit when a new month started. Every first day of a new month seems to catch me by surprise. Like that rollover hasn’t been happening for the last 385 months of my life! Time just gets away from me.

I’ve tried to find ways to wrestle time under control. I ran across this cool idea called Project 365 where you take a photo a day to chronicle your life for a year. I thought that was such a cool idea! How many pictures did I take? Um, maybe six. I dunno. I can’t even remember where they are.

Journaling and blogging are great creative outlets, but they always seem to just remind me that my sense of time is all out of whack. When I crack open my journal to write (yes, this geek does still know how to write by hand!), I look at the last date and think, “Crap! It’s been a week since I’ve written?!?!” Same goes for blogging. I sat down at my desk this morning and thought, “Hey Self, you haven’t written a Monday Madness for this week, better go do that.” Pause. “Crap, it’s not Monday, it’s Thursday! You dork. Hmmmmm, maybe you oughta just blog about that.”

    So here I am. *sigh*
