Finally, Wiccan soldiers get their due

You probably won’t see this on tonight’s news, but the US government has finally agreed to allow Wiccan soldiers and their families to display the pentacle, the symbol of their faith, on VA-issued grave markers. The pentacle joins 38 other approved symbols after lawyers uncovered bias in the government toward Wicca:

Americans United’s attorneys uncovered evidence that the VA’s refusal to recognize the Pentacle was motivated by bias toward the Wiccan faith. President George W. Bush, when he was governor of Texas, had opposed the right of Wiccans to meet at a military base in that state. Bush’s opinion of Wiccans was taken into consideration when making decisions on whether to approve the Pentacle.

After trying for years to secure this simple display of respect for their fallen loved ones, families of Wiccan soldiers filed a lawsuit against the government last November. You can read more about the Pentacle Quest here.

“This settlement has forced the Bush Administration into acknowledging that there are no second class religions in America, including among our nation’s veterans,” said the Rev. Barry W. Lynn, director of Americans United for Separation of Church and State, which represented the Wiccans in the lawsuit.

Amen and Blessed Be.

Monday Madness - What madness is this?

Normally my Monday Madness posts are about strange, kooky, and quirky things I find on the Internet. But this Monday, madness took on a whole new meaning. I’m still having difficulty soaking in the events at Virginia Tech. The numbers are shocking, the loss is staggering. I can’t even begin to imagine that happening in my community.

I stumbled upon a movement to make April 30 a day of blog silence in honor of the VT victims. At first I thought that was a cool idea. But then the extent of suffering in this world made me wonder if our focus isn’t too specific.

I was going to write a long diatribe about the senselessness of the murders, and how our society is numbed to stories of death unless they are sensationalized by the media. After all, people are dying by the dozens in Iraq, Africa, and countless other places. Do we devote three solid days of news coverage to them? Much less shed our tears and rally political support? But I found someone who says all of this more eloquently than I ever could:

Silence is a Memoriam, Not a Reason to Stop Blogging by Lorelle VanFossen.

Though the graphics still say it’s in honor of the Virginia Tech victims, I am pleased to see this on OneDayBlogSilence.com:

On April 30th 2007, the Blogosphere will hold a One-Day Blog Silence in honor of the victims at Virginia Tech. More then 30 died at the US college massacre.

But it´s not only about them. Many bloggers have responded and asked about all the other victims of our world. All the people who die every day. What about them?

This day can be a symbol of support to all the victims of our world!

All you have to do is spread the word about it and post the graphic on your blog on 30th April 2007. No words and no comments. Just respect, reflect and empathy.

One Day Blog SilenceRespect. Reflection. Empathy… My hope is that we all start cultivating those behaviors for everyone in this world who is victimized by violence, war, famine, disease, and tyranny. Not just on April 30, but every day! But I will participate on April 30 and my heart will be reaching out to the universe to pray for all those who suffer at the hands of others.

Will you join?

I can’t believe it’s already Friday

Holy smokes, time flies. It doesn’t help that I’ve been practically comatose for most of a week, thanks to these damned defective sinuses I inherited from my parents. When it comes to sinuses, I ended up with some seriously whacked genes.

The best part of my week has been expanding my circle of online friends. I did an interview last Friday for my podcast and met Megan. She’s working on building her business, so I dispensed some marketing advice that I hope helped ease her worries a bit.

Other than that, not much going on. ;) I learned a valuable lesson, though! Do NOT watch nature shows when you’re PMS-ing. Watching Planet Earth last weekend, I was bawling like a baby. Poor polar bears. Makes me weepy even now.

Monday Madness - Train wreck

If you’ve seen trailers for Blades of Glory, you’ve seen the scene where Will Ferrell is on the treadmill reciting the song he wants them to skate to. When we saw the movie, I told my hubby that I saw an interview that said Ferrell ad libbed most of that. And Nathan said, “You’ve heard the real song, haven’t you?”

“Real song? You mean that’s a real song?”

“Yes!” He promptly sat me down in front of You Tube to demonstrate.

And I haven’t been the same since. I’m scarred. Permanently. The song keeps me up at night.

I’ve heard the first step to healing is confronting the pain. It’s like a horrid train wreck and I can’t look away!!

Wacky weather

This is some seriously wacky weather for April in Texas. Seriously. I’m going to be SOOOOOO bummed if this kills off my garden. :(
