“You’re a witch!” and other Halloween tales

This year for Halloween I decided I’d go all out–put out eyeball lights, dress up, and stage my candy bowl. The eyeball lights didn’t work out because they were just swallowed up by my overgrown bushes, but I had fun with the costume and handing out candy. Here’s a picture of the setup:

The kids seemed to enjoy it, although some of the little ones were scared either by the candles or Nathan–we couldn’t figure out which they were seeing (because he was behind the candles). I had my full witch outfit on–black crushed velvet dress with a sheer and sparkly overlay with moons and stars. And don’t forget the matching hat! To go with the theme, I had a big black cauldron to hold the candy, with jars of witch’s supplies around the bottom. I found these great little bottles at Michael’s that are labeled, “Eye of Toad,” “Wool of Bat,” and “Leg of Lizard.”
It’s so fun to watch the little ones trick-or-treating. They’re alternately scared, inquisitive, or just clueless. But so darned cute in their little outfits. The fairies are my favorite, so they got extra candy. :)

One little one came up to the door and was a little startled to see me. With wide eyes, she whispered, “You’re a witch!” And how do you respond, other than, “Yes. Yes, I am. But I’m a good witch. Want some candy?” :)

Another little one, upon seeing the bottles and cauldron, got up on her tip-toes to peer over the table and calmly asked, “Whatcha makin’?” So the good witch responded, “Treats for the little ones, my dearie.” It was too much fun! :)

Anyhoo, I figure I’ll have to add to my setup next year. We discovered that my feeble attempt at setting the mood was nothing compared to what others do. For the second year in a row, we had a truck and trailer pull through the neighborhood that was totally decked out with decorations, music, and a fog machine. It was pretty cool! A little more than *I* would do, but hey, to each his own. ;)

Doh!! I completely forgot to look for bottles of Newt parts! Darn! I remember you mentioned them, and I so meant to go look for some of my own. I must compliment you on your taste in costumes, as well as your avatar (pretty much because both my costume and avatar look a heck of a lot like yours). :D Your trick-or-treaters sounded adorable!!! I was surprised to find that some kids (even older ones) seemed to be startled by my witch get-up. I guess I’ve forgotten that to most people, witches are still supposed to be scary. ;)
