Monday Madness - Wild world of sports

Is it Balls of Steel or Brains of Mush? You decide.

A new view

I’ve always considered myself compassionate, tolerant, and even supportive of other lifestyles. I’ve had close friends who are gay or lesbian. But today I’ve had an epiphany.

Today I attended Safe Space training. Safe Space is about creating an inclusive and supportive environment for the GLBT (gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender) coworkers. And the experience was so eye opening and moving, it’s hard for me to express it. Hearing, in a straight-forward way, what GLBT people experience on a daily basis in the workplace was humbling. I say humbling because I realized that there is a difference between being supportive and actually understanding.

Why did it never occur to me that a gay man or woman would be afraid to show their family pictures at work? And that when they do show pictures, those pictures are actually moved, thrown away, or even defaced by coworkers.

Another “ah ha” moment is the term “heterosexism,” sexism based on gender identity. Something as simple as asking, “Are you married?” Gay couples can’t get married in most of the US states, so of course this could put someone in a situation of either lying or coming out.

So if you have the opportunity to attend this type of training–many companies offer it–please do it. It’s an amazing exercise in recognizing and supporting diversity, and learning how you can make a difference for someone who may be experiencing a deep level of hurt or frustration in their workplace.

Monday Madness - The reality of press briefings

Hilarious clip from the Craig Ferguson show. :D Poor Don–so misunderstood. Ha! NOT!

Insomnia, South Park style

Ever wonder what I look like after a night of sleeplessness if I was a South Park character?

Now you know what I’ll be looking like tomorrow. :)

Monday Madness - Special Tuesday Election Edition

Election day! I hope you all voted–if you didn’t, shame on you! One of my favorite things about Election Day is that the political ads stop, thank heavens.

People say Texas politics are always dirty, but we haven’t had any mudslinging in my area. Heck, when you live in a place that is so heavily Republican, there’s not much for the candidates to fight over. ;) However, thanks to this lovely contraption called the Internet, we can all take part in the mudslinging, no matter where we’re from or where we vote.

Here are some highlights:

On an amusing note, Paul R. Nelson has found new notoriety because of how he says “I’m Paul R. Nelson” at the end of his ad. There’s even a remix made just for him! Paul R. Nelson’s web site even plugged his appearance on the shock-jock Opie and Anthony show. I guess their thinking is any PR is good PR. ;)

P.S. Just saw NBC and CNN projecting that Democrats have taken control of the House of Representatives. I’ll step out on a limb and declare a hesitant “woohoo!” — hesitant only because Nancy Pelosi may be a little too liberal for me, but change is good. But realistically, how much change can we expect? I worry now we’ll just have legislative gridlock.
