Houston summers are so hot, it’s hard to keep little container plants thriving. This year, I went nuts with a container herb garden. At last count I have over 20 containers! :O I’ve been able to keep my container herb garden alive long enough to actually begin enjoying the fruits of my labor. Over the years, I have fine-tuned my spaghetti sauce recipe to an art (at least I think so). But for the first time, I made my sauce with fresh herbs from my own garden last night. OMG, it was SO good! My best batch yet! I simmered the sauce with fresh sage, thyme, oregano, and basil… then garnished the plates with more fresh herbs. Mmmmmmmmm… It’s safe to say I’m now hooked on this fresh herb thing.

One of the most compelling features of the Internet is how easy it has become for humans to share information on a truly global scale. Out of the weeds of the Internet come jewels like Wikipedia, an online encyclopedia based on a “wiki” system. Users from all of the world post their knowledge of topics into entries arranged like an encyclopedia. I just discovered a new jewel:
SpuriPedia: The compendium of fallacious fact, bogus biographies and nonsense neology.
For a fun time, click on the Random link about midway down the home page. I was greeted with this humorous take on the oath of our highest elected officer: Hypocrytic Oath. Quoting: “The Hipocrytic Oath is the promise that the American President makes at the swearing-in ceremony after his election.” You gotta read the whole entry. ![]()
At the end of last year, my hubby asked if he could use our year-end bonus money to buy a High Definition TV. Man, he really wanted that TV and he kept saying I’d love it. I was skeptical–I mean, a TV is a TV, right? Besides, he works hard for that bonus money, so I said, “You bet.”
But holy cow! I was totally surprised to discover that HDTV really does make a difference! There are two things I really love about HDTV: sports and nature shows. The picture is so sharp. Tune in to an HD football broadcast and it’s better than being there in person! Now, if MLB would figure it out and broadcast baseball in HD, that would be awesome.
Perhaps my favorite show in HD, though, is a nature show called Sunrise Earth. It’s about 45 minutes of gorgeous video photography shot on location as the sun rises. Alaska, Costa Rica, Florida, Maine, Yosemite National Park… they go everywhere! And there is not a single human element in the whole show. Only nature. It’s like being transported to these beautiful places every morning.
One of my favorite movie lines of all times is from Anne of Green Gables: “Tomorrow is a new day. Fresh, with no mistakes in it.” Maybe that’s what is so appealing about watching a new day unfold. As I sit here and type, I’m surrounded by the calming sounds of a beach wind, crashing waves, and chirping birds. I’m tellin’ ya, it’s better than Calgon if you need to get away from reality for a little while! ![]()
I’ve learned a few valuable lessons today. One is that after two weeks of Houston rain and heat, my lawn becomes a veritable jungle. All I need to do is leave my garage sale items out for 2 weeks like my neighbor, and I could hang a “Clampetts” sign on my front door…
Speaking of which, what is it with people who leave their garage sale items out for weeks at a time? And they do it regularly. When they put their stuff out again, we joke that the Clampetts are back. Cuz you gotta joke or else you’d just get pissed off again.
Second lesson: one hour makes a big difference! Mowing at 7:45 is much more tolerable than at 6:45.
Final lesson, and believe me on this one, folks: When one is operating a weed whacker and one needs to sneeze, one really should consider turning off the weed whacker. One’s grass will appreciate it.
