Halloween at the Taylor household

Last year was our first year in a house, so our first year getting trick-or-treaters. I was so excited! What started as excitement ended in disappointment when we ran out of candy half an hour into the evening. So this year, we bought a boatload of candy at Sam’s Club. Nathan piled four bags of Sam’s Club-sized candy into our cart for a whopping $40 investment. And wouldn’t you know it? It’s raining out. :) So now we’re worried we’ll have a boatload of candy leftover, and we need leftover candy like we need another hole in the head. But we’ve got a hardy community, apparently, because we’ve gone through about half of our candy already.

Highlights of the evening:

A group of young teens came to our door in plain streetclothes. When Nathan asked what they were dressed up as, they replied, “We’re aliens dressed up as humans.” Ha! But I tried to convince Nathan that wasn’t as good as when we went caroling on Halloween. We had Santa, Mrs. Claus, and two presents singing Christmas carols instead of yelling trick-or-treat. Man, we got a ton of candy that year!

We decided on a 3-piece distribution. So I open the door and dump 3 pieces into a skeleton’s basket. As he’s walking away, he’s peering into the bucket. He pauses, then turns around, hands back the candy, and says, “I’m allergic to peanuts.” Then he proceeds to go through our candy bowl for candy he’s not allergic to. Or so he says. :) Of course, Nathan’s take on the event was a little different (cuz anyone who knows Nathan knows that his take is always different. Yeah, we’ll just say different). Nathan says our response should have been, “My pappy is a peanut farmer and my grandpappy was a peanut farmer. You’ll get your swollen throat and enjoy it!” LOL What a weirdo.

Well, the rain has let up and the crowds are still coming. Only 4 and half more hours until NaNoWriMo starts! It’s been 15 years since I even attempted to start a novel, so we’ll just have to see what November holds. Wish me luck!

Decadence

As of Monday, I am officially done with school. DONE! The adjustment has been easy, though I still have a few school-time habits to break. Watching the NLCS game on Wednesday night, before I could catch myself, I started to get up to go check into my classroom. What a wonderful feeling to then realize I didn’t have to! WOOHOO!! So now I’m just enjoying not having that extra constraint on my time. And my poor hubby. Saturday night at dinner, after we’d wasted the whole day just putzing around The Woodlands, turns to me and says, “You know, I like it when you’re not worrying about getting home to do school work.” *sigh* That made me hope I wasn’t too much of an ogre these last 28 months. ;)

Today we visited the Texas Renaissance Festival in Plantersville. They’ve done a great job getting the park ready this year, with weekend themes and new picnic tables everywhere. It’s great to just go out and wander the park. And, yes, SHOP! Then, to top off a wonderfully directionless day, I took a jacuzzi bath. In the middle of the afternoon. Hmmmmm, it felt purely decadent! Yup, I can definitely get used to this non-graduate student life…

Still alive and (almost) kicking

It’s been a while since I’ve had the energy to do much of anything “extra.” Unfortunately, blogging is still considered “extra.” :) 6 days and counting!! Then I’ll be done with school and one very large, very stinky monkey will be off my back! I can’t wait.

We really haven’t been up to much lately. My final school project is due on Sunday, so I’m trying to maintain some semblance of discipline amidst this exciting postseason. We bought postseason tickets for the Astros, so that’s been a very enjoyable splurge. And I think we might be turning Nathan into a sports fan, after all! Sure, he doesn’t sit at home and scream at the TV, but he got pretty worked up at the games this weekend. We were both about to pass out on Sunday after that awesome 6-hour 18-inning win!! Screamed ourselves hoarse and my hands are still a wee bit tender. :)

That’s all for now. Just wanted to let my reader ;) know I’m still here.
