This week I am traveling to Laredo (Texas) with my sister to find her a place to live. I can’t believe she’s moving away! (But that’s for another post.)
This was probably the dreariest trip I have ever taken. It had been raining in Houston for days, and it followed us all the way to Laredo and back. I doubt we saw the sun for the entire week!
I’ve never been to Laredo, so I was looking forward to the trip. For the trip down, we decided to take Highway 59 all the way. The other option is I-10 to I-35, which is faster but more boring. The big bonus about traveling Hwy 59 is the stop at Mikeska’s BBQ & Smokehouse in El Campo, Texas. If you have a chance to stop by, you’ll be treated to some fantastic BBQ and mouth-watering breads and cookies. Try the Cream Cheese Cinnamon bread–it’s to die for! Now, to give you fair warning, if you’re put off by hundreds of steely eyes watching you eat from their permanent perches on the walls, you might get a little unnerved in here. Mikeska’s also has an impressive collection of taxidermy. ![]()
Upon arriving in Laredo, we discovered that our hotel was not what we hoped. Well, it sucked. I walk in (having told my boss that I would work remotely while I was gone) and see the Cat 5 outlets and let out a whoop of triumph. Yes! I get high-speed for my tunnel connection to work. My hopes were dashed as we realized that they wired the place, but don’t have it hooked up. Is it just me or is that stupid?
Plus, my dial-up connections to work have been disable because they’re in the process of moving me to another remote access protocol. Man, what a letdown.
But, *da da-da-da!* thank god for Google! My hubby found me a wireless hotspot. Mapquest couldn’t find it, so I gave in and used the old-fashioned way of finding it–I called them on the phone. *gasp* Sure enough, they’re about 30 seconds from the hotel, so I am off to get my high-speed Internet fix! If you’re ever in Laredo, please visit the good folks at the Open Coffee Bar. Not only are they cool enough to offer a free wireless hotspot (and let me sit there for hours doing my work and school work), but they make a mean White Chocolate Mocha and ham and swiss cheese sandwich. And I got to watch Spanish soap operas the entire time. ![]()
