Welcome to my rant for the day. I was driving to PetSmart this evening and encountered yet another reason why I believe 98% of the population is either stupid or utterly self-important. OK, maybe I should say “and/or” instead of “either.” Grrrrrr.
Picture the scene: driving down a 4 lane road (2 one way, 2 the other), no median, on a bridge. The traffic is backed up at the light ahead because a train is passing. I’d say I’m a good 50 yards back from the intersection in the middle of the bridge and I’m in one of the middle lanes. So, I turn up my radio and prepare to make the most of a 3-minute wait.
My heart starts to beat a little faster when I notice people in front of me pulling into the left lane so they can get away. No matter that they’re turning left on a red light. The pulse quickens a little more when in my side mirror, I see people behind me making a U-turn so they can go around. At least they looked before turning, I suppose.
OK, so the blood really hits simmer when someone from 5 cars behind me (who is a good 50 yards from the intersection) pulls into the oncoming traffic lane to zoom up beside everyone sitting still so they can pull into the left turn lane! Yes, there is still oncoming traffic. IDIOTS! And to prove what little lemmings we humans are, once ONE person does it, about a half a dozen other people assume they should do it too. So the lemmings stop way up front in the left turn lane. Blood is still merely simmering, but hits the boil level when the 2nd car back in that esteemable group decides he’s going to pull to the left of the 1st person in line so he can turn first. Still on a red. ARGH!
What is with people? Do traffic laws mean nothing to them? Apparently not, because it’s obvious that it’s much more important that they reach their destination before anyone else. The display of apathy and self-importance and disregard just blows my mind. Maybe it’s the way my mother raised me–obey the rules and don’t endanger others. Whenever these idiots take it upon themselves to blatantly disregard traffic laws just because it’s a matter of their convenience, I just want to go ballistic. I mean, what can you do? Displaying the finger or honking your horn as they pass does nothing–they don’t care. They are about nothing but their own little place in the world, and how in that world they’re the most important person above anyone else.
So if you’re one of those people who drive like this, consider this the honk and the finger. Not that you’d care.
But I feel a little better.
