Believing

You know, I’m discovering that I totally suck at this whole blog thing. I just never remember to update. I mean, I’m always thinking of things to add, but I manage to get sidetracked before I can make it happen…

I’ve been having an Alexander day. Specifically, Alexander from the Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day fame. Did you ever have one of those moments when you see or hear something that is affirming and reassuring at a time when you really need it? Like today, I’m feeling completely overwhelmed by school and a major project that is due tomorrow. I’m not relating well to my teammates, which is a major source of the frustration. I am compeltely underwhelmed at work, feeling unimportant, unappreciated, and like I don’t belong. And I am blessed to come across this message in a card:

You may not think you can reach it–climb anyway.
You may not think you will be heard–speak anyway.
You may not think you can change things–try anyway.
Believe in yourself.

A small reminder that even though we sometimes feel insignificant and unable to meet the challenge, we have much within us that will bring significance and success in the end.

Oh, good grief

Every once in a while, I see a news story that just boggles my mind and renders me momentarily speechless. The latest is this hulabaloo over the CBS miniseries about Ronald Reagan. So, for all intents and purposes, the RNC seeks to censure this film that they haven’t even seen yet! They’re worried the facts may not portray Ronald and Nancy Reagan correctly (really, they’re worried about flattering). So they want CBS to either let the RNC scholars guide the film’s final cut, or CBS to add a crawl at the bottom of the screen every 10 minutes telling the poor, unsuspecting American public that what they’re watching is fiction. Um, hello? This is a film. A film from Hollywood. Am I the only one who would know that the film I’m watching is a work of fiction? Yes, it’s important to have fair and accurate biographies–but that’s what they call a documentary, not a movie.

Besides, when it comes to unbiased fact, I wouldn’t trust the RNC version anymore than I would trust the CBS version. Everyone has an angle, my friends. But apparently the RNC angle is getting strong enough to prevail over common sense. I have issues with much of what’s being argued in this conservative-versus-media debate, but most of all, I wonder how people can honestly object to something they haven’t even seen yet. I mean, seriously, don’t we have more urgent things to worry about? Good grief.
