“May peace prevail on earth.” WilWheaton.net has a very fitting tribute this morning.
Every morning as I get ready for work I watch the morning news. Sometimes a local station, sometimes CNN. I still remember this morning 2 years ago as vividly as if it were this morning.
I got out of the shower and my husband said, “C’mon, you’ve got to see this.” I walked out into our bedroom and there was live coverage of smoke billowing from Tower 1 of the World Trade Center. No one knew what was happening. Then, utterly puzzled, I watch as a plane flies in from the right side of the screen but doesn’t come back out through the left. Yes, it takes a few moments for my mind to register that a plane just plowed into a skyscraper right before my eyes. At that moment, my husband and I looked at each other and we knew immediately this was a terrorist act. I watched the news coverage for as long as I could, but I had to go to work. But once at work, I think everyone quickly realized no work was getting done. Our cafeteria downstairs has a big screen TV, and as I walked by I saw that the entire cafeteria was packed with people trying to see the TV. Upstairs, down the hall from my office, people gathered in the hallway because someone had an AM radio turned on. After a while, I sit down to try to do some work, but then I decide to call my husband. While we’re on the phone, a tower collapses. Soon, managers started telling people to just go home and be with their families.
The loss of human life that day is staggering to me. That anyone, regardless of religion, could so maliciously disregard the value of life astonishes me. It’s just too much for my feeble human mind (or heart) to handle.
I am also deeply saddened by the two years following the tragedy. I”m outraged that the terrorists have won a striking victory. They have shaken the very foundation of our society and the democratic principles that shape this great nation. This is the true loss, and my heart aches.
Last night we watched the premiere of the Joe Schmo show on Spike TV. My husband and I have very different tastes in TV, so I watched expecting to hate it, but it was enjoyable. I just feel sorry for the guy! I mean, the show’s characters are so over the top! In a way, I think “how can this guy NOT know this is staged?!” Then, on the other hand, we humans are a generally trusting bunch, so it’s not that surprising that he doesn’t question the scenario. I just wonder why people who get sucked in to these elaborate schemes actually sign the release form. Do they REALLY want to be on national TV that badly? Yipes. But there are some classic stereotypes and one-liners in this show. Ill watch it a second time to see if it catches on. Just please, god, don’t let me get sucked in to one of the Temptation Islands and its ilk…
Speaking of reality TV game shows, I miss Murder in Small Town X. Man, THAT was an awesome show. It was actually somewhat original with a real plot.
Last night we made our second trip down to the Alamo Draft House Cinema at West Oaks mall. That is, like, the coolest place ever. EVER!!! You eat dinner and drink booze while you watch a movie. And the people there are the nicest movie theater employees I’ve ever encountered. EVER!!! (But movie theater employees are for another post altogether.)
First we went for my birthday to see American Wedding. Last night we saw this wonderfully kooky piece called The Animation Show. I’m not big into animation, but this was pretty fun. Besides, I love listening to my husband’s laugh, so a grand time was had by all.
So, if you’re in a town with an Alamo Draft House Cinema, pay them a visit! You won’t regret it!
My younger sister graduated this spring from New Mexico State University, so she was very excited that NMSU was having a televised football game today. We got the whole family together for a BBQ dinner and football party. What we got was an evening filled with screaming and forehead-slapping. The final score was 66-7. That’s a game? I think not. That’s like trying to have a conversation with a brick wall. You know it’s there but it’s just not doing anything. Poor guys. What a sucky way to start the season.
